Stubby and his diet

'Stubby' & his friends come and visit our house daily.

As you will notice by past postings, we love to watch the squirrels at our house. I noticed the other day that one of the squirrels has a tail that is somewhat shorter than normal. Another one has a tail that looks like it was broke in half, but healed itself. We have had a total of 8 squirrels at one time eating the bird food. It is fun to watch how the 'older or rank' of the squirrels falls into the order of eating. Last week Tom mentioned that they were eating everything we put out for them in one day. It was costing us a fortune to feed them. So...... I made an executive decision....the squirrels were going on a diet. Well, I really mean a slow down in the food that is available to them. My Mother said they are just like people who abuse the welfare system. If they don't have to look for food, they won't. Amazingly they showed up everyday regardless of the fact I had not put any more food out. They cleaned up the bird food on the ground, and will be rewarded Sunday morning with more food. The mean ole farmer man that farms the ground behind us, is cutting down the stand of trees behind our house and the neighbors houses. Tom and I will have to build some squirrel houses. We have to take care of Mother Natures creatures.

There are black squirrels in our area, just not at our house. I have threatened my son, who lives across from Whites Residential, that I am going to borrow a black squirrel to incorporate into our neighborhood. Until the squirrels do something funny again........I sign off.

Now if that doesn't just beat all: a diet for squirrels! And that's not the best part. They're now to play a pivotal role in diversity training.

What fun. Nature is such a fabulous tutor (and form of entertainment)!

Oh my gosh, Cindy - those photos and your post are HILARIOUS!!! LOL I love Stubby! All of mine are Sammy except for one who has deformed arms (I posted about him a couple of months ago)... I was just thinking the exact same thing this morning while throwing out EXPENSIVE no salt peanuts - these guys are killing my food budget - they eat better than we do sometimes! I think I'm going to do some tough love in our yard, too, and put the little guys on a diet. I'll let you know how it goes! ha ha ... Donna @ An Enchanted Cottage

Cindy, when Spence was over we watched one of the squirrels in our yard hanging upside down on the birdfeeder. I wasn't quick enough to get a picture. Spence and I knew you would have loved to see it.
Hugs,
